Counterpunching is an essential aspect of combat sports whether it’s boxing, kickboxing, and MMA. It’s all about taking advantage of an opponent's attack by defending yourself first and quickly striking back. Counterpunching has numerous reasons for being a valuable strategy in boxing. It enables fighters to create opportunities to catch their opponent off guard and simultaneously discourages their opponent from attacking.

Whether you’re slipping, parrying, or blocking, there are always several counterpunching options or combinations you can throw while defending yourself. The important thing to remember is to stay relaxed while deflecting an opponent’s punch or when you’re slipping and rolling. These techniques take constant practice to sharpen your reflexes, timing, and accuracy to execute correctly.

Counterpunching is a crucial aspect of boxing that can make the difference between winning and losing a fight. It can be a highly effective strategy for conserving energy, creating openings for attacking opportunities, and frustrating your opponent into making mistakes. Some of the world’s best fighters have built their career solely on a counterpunching strategy. And with a defense-first approach, they’ve been able to stay healthy and add to the longevity of their careers.

This month, every coach will teach you a variety of scenarios and styles for counterpunching. It’s a fun technique to master.
